Non-Partisan Resources For Being An Informed Voter

By Mary Anne Broshek

For the Beacon

Well, it’s election time, and once again we are overwhelmed by hooey. I have been looking for ways to find “just the facts” and have found Web sites where you can find facts on which to make voting decisions. I had two requirements in searching for information sources:

  • The site has to be non-partisan.
  • The information has to be presented in a simple manner – no long, technical explanations with lots of charts and lists.

I listed all of the Web sites I found in a table with two headings: “What You Want To Find Out” and “Where To Find It.” Because the table is large, and in order to make the Web site addresses clickable, the table is on the Beacon’s Web site at TinyURL.com/cjgs5ky instead of printed in the paper.

Some of the topics in the table include:

  • How to find state and federal elected officials’ voting records
  • Components of the federal deficit
  • Recession charts
  • New Hampshire 2012/2013 budget and budget cuts
  • Fact-checking sites
  • Facts that determine child well-being, state by state
  • Medicare and Obamacare descriptions
  • A non-partisan Web site on the Concord Coalition co-founded by New Hampshire’s own Warren Rudman

I learned a lot doing this research, and I hope you will use it to consider all viewpoints and become a wise voter.
