Through the Reading Glasses: March 2014

By Janet Moore, Andover Library Trustee

Welcome to winter-over and over again; as I write, the forecast speaks of more snow for mid-February. So I’ll start you off with a book based in the Arctic wilderness of the Greenland ice cap. Yes, Frozen in Time is Mitchell Zuckoff’s recounting of the survival saga of a downed World War II flight crew, but it’s also the story of the modern search for the remains of one of the rescue crews.

If that’s not inspiring enough to warm your heart, try I Am Malala, the 15-year-old author’s own story of fighting for education and being shot by the Taliban in Pakistan. Malala has returned to the podium to spread her message to the world: Education for all is what will save us.

Like most libraries, the two in Andover and East Andover work together to provide you with not only literature and services but programs as well. We sponsor informative sessions designed to share information and points of view on contemporary issues.

Our last two offerings, question and answer sessions on the new health care provisions, and how recent Supreme Court decisions may affect you, have been held at AE/MS because they have larger meeting spaces. We may only be a co-sponsor, but we are not promoting a particular political views. The strength of any public institution, such as a library, is to reach all of the people.

Come join us when you next see a flyer around town, especially since both of our recent speakers will probably return for your edification.
