AE/MS Poetry Night Ends in Two Ties!

Two winners in sixth grade and in seventh

By Brenda Lance, AE/MS faculty

AE/MS held its annual poetry night on April 10 with a packed house in attendance. The audience was exceptional, as they were delighted with poems that were funny, sad, classic, and even a few student originals! They heard renditions of O Captain, My Captain, The Road Less Traveled by Robert Frost, and two from our local poet, Donald Hall.

All students in grades one through eight recited a poem on April 2 and 3 for the in-house judges, Pat Laliberte and Betty Morse. From there, finalists and alternates were chosen, and students eagerly awaited the results, which were given to students on April 4.

For some students, this was their first experience speaking in front of a large audience, but each student managed to fight off their stage fright jitters and deliver their poem with great enthusiasm!

Our poetry night judges – Sue “Raz” Rasweiler, Sarah Will, and Laurie Zimmerman – were awed by all of the participants and had a most difficult time breaking a first-place tie in both sixth and seventh grade. So, for the first time, we gave out dual first place plaques in those two grades.

Many thanks to everyone who attended and listed so intently to all of the students recite. The list of students who were chosen to recite at Poetry Night follows:
