Walkers and bicyclists are invited to explore historic landmarks along the section of the Northern Rail Trail between Potter Place and Danbury on Saturday, June 7, which is National Rail Trails Day.
The event is free and open to the public and will be held rain or shine. It begins at 10 AM at the Potter Place trail head kiosk, at the intersection of Routes 4 and 11 to the west of Andover village.
Participants may choose one of three tours: a walking tour (two- or five-mile walks), a one-way bicycle tour (seven miles), or a 14-mile round-trip cycling tour. One-way cyclists should e-mail CharleyFreiberg@nulltds.net for shuttle planning.
All tours will conclude at the Danbury Country store, two to two and a half hours later, having stopped along the way to find and admire mile and section markers, original stone box culverts, railroad telltales, a “hidden” stone arch bridge, and more.
The event is co-sponsored by the Wilmot Public Library (WPL) and the Friends of Northern Rail Trail in Merrimack County (FNRT-MC). The project grew out of a WPL event this past February entitled Riding the New Hampshire Rail Trail: Photographic and Historic Documentation. During the February event, Wilmot photographer Charley Frieberg created so much interest in landmarks along the rail trail that attendees clamored for a field trip to see the sites in person during warmer weather.
