The Andover Lions Club does a lot for the area, but many people have no idea what the Lions do! They think it’s nothing but meetings. I thought about this and came up with some of the community service items that the Lions currently do. Here is a partial list:
- We support the Andover Food pantry.
- We give out scholarships to three deserving high school students.
- We perform state-of-the-art vision testing for preschoolers, which helps to prevent permanent damage later in life.
- We assist school nurses in providing much-needed sight and hearing testing.
- We get money-strapped folks free eye exams and free eyeglasses. Many of these people can’t go to work because they do not have the glasses to be able to drive themselves.
- We provide emergency assistance to families who have lost their homes to fire.
- We host the Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast and provide food on the Village Green. We provide the Concord Coach in the parade at the Fourth of July celebration.
- Several times a year, we get together for breakfast then clean up the roadside trash along Route 4 between Andover and Danbury.
- We sell food at the Musterfield Farm Day Fair and the Danbury Fair and host a free Halloween Open House for the children.
And who wants to miss the fun at the annual golf tournament or our newest upcoming event: our first annual Oktoberfest?
Besides the events mentioned above, we will again this year be spending a fun night at the Fisher Cats on Saturday, July 19, to watch them play the Portland Sea Dogs, the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. The outing will include a delicious barbecue on the party deck and watching the game from some fantastic seats. Please call Bill Leber at 735-5144 to get your tickets. They are $35 per person and are going quickly.
It’s actually a lot of fun to get together and work as a group to provide all these services. But we can’t do it without you. We need younger folks with energy and ideas to keep making this happen and to make new things happen! If you want more information, just ask any Lion. Or contact Dan Coolidge at 542-2187 or DanCoolidge@nullyahoo.com. Or join us at one of our meetings at Naughty Nellie’s every other Monday at 6 PM. Reservations not needed!
It only takes a few hours a month, and you get to work with a host of great people doing great things for our community. It’s fun, it’s easy, and we’re a great bunch to work alongside!
