The Tucker Mountain School House will be open on Sunday, July 13, from 1 to 3 PM. There is no charge. Pat Baker’s homemade cookies are provided and make the two-mile trip up Tucker Mountain Road worth it.

The 1837 one-room school house was built on land originally settled by William Tucker. William was born in Salisbury, Massachusetts, in 1760 and moved to Andover in 1794. He resided on Tucker Mountain with his wife, Mary. They had seven children. Their third child, William, was born in 1794 and later donated a corner of the property for the school. (From John R. The cellar hole of the Tucker family homestead is a short walk from the school. Visitors may tour the site when visiting. Extensive stone foundations and walls suggest that the farm was quite large. It burned around 1901.

Artifacts of the period will be on display, including many school books. The Andover Historical Society maintains the schoolhouse and holds regular open houses on the second Sunday from June through October or by appointment. Please call Donna Baker-Hartwell at 735-5586 or Pat Cutter at 735-5628.
