On Thursday, August 7, at 7:30 PM at the First Baptist Church in New London, the Summer Music Associates presents Cuba – Music and Images from the Forbidden Island performed by the Walden Chamber Players.

Founded in 1997, the Boston-based Walden Chamber Players has garnered a reputation for being one of the most exciting and versatile chamber groups performing today. Critics have hailed its performances of everything from Bach to Schoenberg, and Chamber Music America Magazine raves, “A season spent with the Walden Chamber Players is a time for discovery.” The success of its performances, recordings, and educational curricula has earned it a place as one of the most sought-after chamber ensembles in the United States.

The musical selections will include Jose White’s La Bella Cubana for two violins and piano; Joaquin Nin’s Seguida Espanola for cello and guitar; Lecuona’s Malaguena for piano; Ignacio Cervantes’s Seven Cuban Dances for string quartet; the world premiere of Jorge Martin’s Serenata for violin and piano; Leo Brouwer’s El Decameron Negro for guitar; and Tulio Peramo Cabrera’s 3 Imagenes Cubanas for guitar and string quartet.

Performers are Robert Bekkers, guitar; Irina Muresanu and Olga Patramanskaya-Bell, violin; Christof Huebner, viola; Ashima Scripp, cello; and Kristhyan Benitez, piano.

Join us at 6:30 PM for a photographic exhibition by artist Doug Munch and a thought-provoking lecture on the musical history and culture of Cuba by speaker Benjamin Willis.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $5 for students and are available at Summer Music Associates, PO Box 603, New London 03257; at 526-8234; at SummerMusicAssociates.com; at the door; or by cash or check only at Morgan Hill Bookstore, Tatewell Gallery, or the Lake Sunapee Region Chamber of Commerce.
