Jack McAuliffe Recalls High School in Andover …

... and many other tales of the old days

By Lindy Heim, Wilmot Historical Society
Jack McAuliffe was the guest presenter at the Wilmot Historical Society's 2014 annual meeting and Stories of Old Wilmot program on November 2. Ninety-year-old Jack, demonstrating his enviable memory, told stories of growing up in Wilmot on the family's Stearns Road farm. He walked or bicycled to several country school houses before attending high school in Andover, where he boarded nearby on weekdays to save his family from having to make the long commute from North Wilmot. Jack held spellbound a crowd of about 50 with his remembrances, including those of the 1938 hurricane; the scarcity of work during the Depression; the times when five strong men rode on the snowplow, some raising and lowering the blades; and most amusingly, when there was a fire in the outhouse hole. In the photo, Jack is pointing to the outhouse on a photo of the family farm. Photo and caption: Lindy Heim
