The South Danbury Christian Church kicks off its 2015 Speaker Series with two great presentations in January and the return of the winter soup and salad: a light meal to warm up the evening and the audience before the presentation. “Now that it’s cold and dark again, we’re amping up on warm and cozy,” says Kathy Neustadt, one of the series’ organizers. “People seem to like getting out to hear an interesting presentation but also to break bread—and, in this case, slurp soup—together.” The meal begins at 6:30 PM and is free to the public (donations are accepted), and the talks begin at 7 PM.
On Friday, January 9, gardeners—seasoned and new and everything in between—are invited to join us for “Winter Gardening,” a chance to plan our spring and summer gardens with the experience and wisdom of the community. This is a follow-up to the October session, “How Did Your Garden Grow,” where people expressed interest in getting together again to discuss seed-buying options, make selections, and possibly share orders to save on costs. So, bring your favorite seed catalogs, gardening books, past years’ garden logs, and whatever else you think will make the exchange more lively and informative. This should also be great fun for arm-chair gardeners: all the excitement and none of the weeding!
Two weeks later, on Friday, January 23, TOM BARTLETT, of Moultonborough, will present an evening of original “contemporary folk” music, singing and playing the 6- and 12-string guitar. Tom started his musical career nearly 50 years ago (“My first time in front of an audience was at a school assembly, where I sang the song ‘Dirty Old Town’ learned from a Jackie Washington [aka Jack Landron] album!”), and—it should be noted—he was among the first to arrive at Jack’s presentation at the SDCC in November to share his debt to Jack as an influence and inspiration. Tom is very much a part of the New Hampshire folk music scene and writes a (sometimes) weekly newsletter on folk music in the area; one of his newest songs, “You Can’t Get There From Here,” was also recently showcased on NPR’s “The Art of the Song.” It should be a great evening!
