The unpredictability of this winter’s weather will not stop the Andover Fish & Game Club (AF&G) from hosting its two annual ice fishing derbies.

The Al Chadwick Memorial Ice Fishing Derby, which is open to any aspiring angler, will be held on Saturday, February 7, at Kezar Lake in North Sutton. The entry fee is $10 per person, and there will be cash prizes awarded for each category of fish.

The derby starts at first light and ends at 1 PM. Please bring your own tackle, bait, and refreshments. When you arrive, register at the bob house with the red flag at the west end of the lake. If you have any questions about this derby, call 735-5717.

The 31st annual Willis Nowell Memorial Kids Ice Fishing Derby, for kids 15 and under, will be held on Eagle Pond in Wilmot (off of Route 4) on Saturday, March 7. (Bad weather date is March 8.) Stay tuned for more details in the next Beacon. Come join us for a fun time on the ice.

Thank you to everyone who has attended our fundraising events, which make it possible for the AF&G to sponsor fun, family-friendly experiences like these derbies. An important mission of the AF&G is to educate the public, particularly children, about the outdoors, wildlife, and outdoor sports such as hunting and fishing. We always appreciate your support. Thank you, as well, to Club members and their families and to supporters of the AF&G, who donate time, money, and supplies to our events.
