Leslie W. Shaw, 89, of New London, died on February 26, 2015 at the New London Hospital. He was born in East Andover on April 21, 1925, the son of Irving W. and Vivian (Fish) Shaw, Jr.
Les graduated from Andover High School in 1943. He joined the Navy upon graduation and served during World War II and received honorable discharge in 1946.
He lived in Manchester before moving to New London in 1946. From 1982 to 1986 he lived in Wilmot and then moved back to New London.
He was a builder and carpenter and worked for Lull and Prescott and Clarence Granger before owning and operating Leslie W. Shaw Builder in 1953.
He was a member of the Elkins Chapel Society and the Wilmot Baptist Church. Les was a member of King Solomon’s Lodge #14 F&AM and received the 1999 Mason of the Year award. He was also member and past President of Mount Kearsarge Shrine Club. He was a member of American Legion Post #40 and was very active, marching in many parades and participating in funeral honors. Les enjoyed golf, gardening, and fishing.
He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jennifer Shaw White in 1997, and a brother, Richard Shaw. Members of his family surviving include his wife of 69 years, Lois (Stuart) Shaw of New London; two sons and their wives, Roger and Agnes Shaw of Concord and David and Frankie Shaw of Greenville, South Carolina; five grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jill Shaw of Concord, Anne Shaw of Greenville, South Carolina, Kathryn and Brian Sanders of Easley, South Carolina, Nancy and Jeremy West of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, and Emily and Jeremy Hickey of Clermont, Florida; 15 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gertrude Bellerose of Tampa, Florida and Patricia St. Cyr of Manchester.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 1, at 1 PM at the Wilmot Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Allen Koop, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery in Wilmot in the spring with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post #40, 45 Greeley Road, Springfield NH 03284.
