Danbury Sustainability Group Begins to See Results

Discuss lack of a paper with Hometown Voice

Press release

The Sustainability group continues to meet after the Winter Market on the first Saturday of the month at the Grange Hall in Danbury. The free flowing group discusses lots of ideas and “what ifs” and that often leads to just more discussions. In March, the group rejoiced in seeing some results in response to past talks.

First, seeds from the first group buying event were delivered to farms and backyard gardeners. Some are adding to their home gardens, trying new things and planning for a fruitful season ,while Huntoon Farm plans to experiment growing some grains. Secondly, the edible landscape gals have some creative plans approved for community demo gardens. And lastly, group concerns from the very first meetings were expressed that residents were hard to be informed. Danbury Community Center newsletters are discarded as junk mail and we lack a free paper widely available with Danbury coverage. A guest at our the meeting was Kathleen Firth from the Hometown Voice. She has listened to these concerns and responded by including a Danbury Page in the March edition as well as increasing the paper drops in the community. Good communication between the paper and the group is developing so that timely local news reaches the paper and are more available. “Danburians” should find it easier to develop the habit of reading the local if they so wish.

A brochure has been created to introduce the group. The trifold piece explains the group’s interests which have created core groups with veins that weave in and out of each group; yet totally link everyone in the common goal of creating a sustainable community.

The next meeting will be on April 4, at 2 PM at the Grange Hall. Possible agenda item will be a meeting with our Danbury Transfer Station staff. As the dump is open until 4 PM on this day, the meeting might require a field trip. The purpose is to begin to formulate ideas on tackling a town wide composting project , eventually leading to a plan and meeting with the town officials.

The group contact person for the next 6 months will be Kathy Neustadt. She can be reached by e-mail at kdn@nullcomcast.net. She can add you to the contact list and direct you to the right person if you have a particular interest.
