The second annual St Baldrick's fundraiser to fight childhood cancer was a big success on March 28 in the Proctor Academy gym. The event reached its goal of $20,000 raised, but you can still donate at StBaldricks.org through the end of the year in hopes of helping the event surpass last year's $30,000 raised. Members of the Salisbury Fire Department, the Andover Fire Department, and the Andover EMS stopped for a minute to take a “before” photo at the St Baldrick's event on March 28. Shortly thereafter, “feeling the breeze in the air” took on a whole new meaning as they all got their heads shaved to raise funds to fight childhood cancer. The Andover Fire Department was awarded the “Brave to Shave” team award (the white fire helmet that Chief Rene Lefebvre is holding) for the most money raised at last year's 2014 St. Baldrick’s event, for which they raised $10,874. This year they have teamed with Andover EMS to raise $5,295 so far. The new team hopes to raise the most money for this year’s event and be able to keep the trophy for another year. Jill Jones Grotnes, member of “Team Rebecca, Fight Like a Girl,” shaved her head in honor of Rebecca S. of Boscawen, age 9, who is fighting Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Rebecca inspired Jill to shave and to fundraise a total of $2,368 (so far), making Jill the current top participant for the 2015 St. Baldrick’s event at Proctor Academy. As the electric shavers snarl, Kelly Eigabroadt and Gail Parenteau clasp hands in mutual support. Kelly is cousin and Gail is aunt to Emme Brophy's mother. Emme is battling leukemia, having been diagnosed shortly after her second birthday.

Gail Parenteau, AE/MS' "Saint Gail of the Big Office," holds Emme Brophy, her niece's little girl. Emme was diagnosed with leukemia just a week after her second birthday. In February, Emme went through the second phase of treatment, called "intensification," with the highest doses of chemo and steroids that she'll receive throughout her treatment. Emme's mother, father, brother Sawyer, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandmother, and friends were at the St Baldricks event to support Emme as well as Proctor and Andover.
