On August 5, two area children spoke about their camp experiences after returning from the North Country Adventure Camp at Barry Conservation Camp located at the Berlin Fish Hatchery. Sadie Barton and Isaiah Hernandez thanked members at the Elkins Fish and Game Club’s regular club meeting and shared their favorite camp experiences. Sadie’s was shooting and canoeing, and Isaiah’s was the hiking.

Sadie lives in Andover and is the daughter of Melissa and Paul Barton; Isaiah lives in Newport and his mom, Jen Hamel is a familiar face at the Blackwater Restaurant.

The Elkins Fish and Game Club sent nine area children to camp this year, bringing the total children sponsored since 1993 to 115. Barry Conservation Camp is operated by the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Program in cooperation with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

Camperships are for week-long programs which focus on fishing, shooting sports, and hunter education. “These areas of interest fit the club’s mission, and much of our fundraising is dedicated to making sure children from the area have this opportunity,” said Mike Gelcius, club president.

Elkins Fish and Game Club also sponsors the maintenance and repairs at the Coyote Cabin at Barry Conservation Camp as part of the club’s mission. More information on club activities can be found by visiting ElkinsFishAndGame.net.
