Seasonal affective disorder (also called SAD) is a type of depression that follows the seasons. The most common type of SAD is called winter depression. It usually begins in late fall or early winter. Those with seasonal affective disorder may feel depressed, anxious, have less energy, difficulty concentrating on or completing tasks and may withdraw from friends, family, and social activities. It’s estimated to affect 10 million Americans. Don’t brush off that yearly feeling as simply a case of the “winter blues” or a seasonal funk that you have to tough out on your own. Learn how to take steps to keep your mood and motivation steady throughout the year. Please call COA at 526-6368 to register.

New Hampshire Missing Money
Tuesday, November 10 1:30pm
Did you know there is approximately $20 million dollars annually in unclaimed property in New Hampshire? Could some of this property be yours? The New Hampshire Abandoned Property Division is charged with the responsibility of receiving, processing and hopefully returning unclaimed property belonging to the citizens of New Hampshire. A recently developed program provides senior center members with a 30 minute presentation from a member of the Abandoned Property Division who explains the unclaimed property program. Attendees also receive valuable information for keeping their funds active and not subject to unclaimed property transfer. After the presentation, a division claim representative will be available to search for unclaimed funds for anyone who attends. The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators estimates that at least one in every ten citizens has unclaimed property owed to them. Could this be you?! Please call COA at 526-6368 to register.

Humanist & Agnostic Discussion Group
Thursday, November 19 1:30pm
The word “atheist” has negative connotations – being against something. But many “atheists” are not against the idea of God, but rather FOR a reasoned and logical search for spiritual meaning in life. They want to start at the beginning, with no preconceptions about religion or deities, and ask what if anything makes spiritual sense. Often these agnostics feel very lonely. Everyone else seems to have all their spiritual ducks in a row; they know exactly what they believe to be the “truth.” The agnostics are made to feel “out of it.” All they can do is quote Sportn’ Life in Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” when he famously sang, “It Ain’t Necessarily So.” People who say that it ain’t necessarily so are often challenged with “Why can’t you be like everyone else? You’re just an anti-social trouble-maker.” This is the group for anti-social trouble-makers. We seek people who want to ask the difficult questions about religion and spirituality. Why do humans, alone in the world as a species, seek divine governance? Where does this come from and what kind of gods did we create in response to this need? How is it that people believe what they do? Is there anything worth believing in, or is it all nonsense?
In order to feel comfortable in this group one needs to agree to two premises. First, the world is as we detect it through our senses. Second, truth emerges through the use of the scientific method. We take hard data and massage it through reasoned logic to approach the truth, which we will never really know for sure. Come discuss your ideas of religion and spirituality. Bring your questions and be prepared to change your mind. Please call COA at 526-6368 to sign up.
Movie & Pizza Night
Friday, November 20 5:00pm
“Philomena”
Judi Dench stars in the story of Philomena Lee, mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock and given up for adoption. Nearly 50 years later, Philomena meets Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan), a former BBC reporter looking for his next big story. Together, they embark on a journey to locate her long lost son. As the pieces of the puzzle come together, the unlikely travel companions form a comic and heartwarming friendship.
Please call COA at 526-6368 to register.
Meditation Class
Saturday, November 21 10:00am
Meditation is a process of transforming the mind. It enhances clarity, concentration, relaxation and positive mind states while alleviating stress, anxiety, depression and other medical conditions. This is done by focusing the mind, staying present and being aware of thoughts. We will be sitting in chairs and will be doing some silent/guided meditation sessions along with contemplations. No prior meditation experience is necessary. These on-going classes will meet every other Saturday and will be guided by Ilene Venizelos. For questions or to register, please call COA at 526-6368.
