Rescued Crow is Back With Its Flock

Seven weeks in the "hospital" to mend a broken wing

Donna Baker-Hartwell opens the cage for a crow that has recovered from a badly broken wing. Maria Colby, a New Hampshire Wildlife Rehabilitator who owns and runs Wings of Dawn in Henniker, took care of the crow for seven weeks while its wing healed. Donna had taken the bird to Maria after catching it by forcing it to hop into Highland Lake. “He was a fast hopper — too fast for me to catch on land,” Donna said. “Crows are very smart and communal. I know that his flock recognized him as soon as he announced that he was back. Within a few minutes of his release, we heard ‘Caw, caw!’ Soon about four other crows came nearby, and there was a lot of cawing back and forth. And that was it!””
