New hill poses no problems for our kids

On January 11, eleven ski jumpers from the Andover Outing Club (AOC) took part in the first Jumping Tournament at Gunstock in many years. The meet took place on a newly renovated K15 meter jump and a snow sculptured K5 meter jump.

On the K5 jump, second year AOC jumpers Sophia Reynolds took first and Mark Roberts took second. Rookie AOC jumpers Spencer Lovlien, Bode Fanjoy, Emma Pine, and Eliza Giuliani finished 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively. It’s unprecedented to have so many new jumpers take part in the first away meet, and we are very proud of these kids.

None of the jumpers skiing on the K15 had ever seen it before, but Gunstock Nordic Association’s Lisa, Paul, and Jonathan Kling had done a great job of refurbishing the hill, and the event went off without a hitch.

Thanks also go to AOC parent Kathleen Doyle, who has been very involved in helping Gunstock Ski Jumping get going again, and who also did all the scoring for the meet and somehow managed to take pictures as well.

In the J4 class (age 10 to 11), David Reynolds set the standard with a jump of nine meters with good style points. Brother Matt Reynolds was close behind in 2nd, Jake McKerley was 3rd, and Noah King was 4th. All four were having their first meet since transitioning to jumping skis.

The longest jumps of the meet were turned in by J2 (age 14 to 15) Polly Carter with two jumps of 9.5 meters to lead the field.

It was great to be at a meet at Gunstock again.
