Humanist & Agnostic Discussion Group

Thursday, April 21 1:30pm

The group met in February and discussed the moral significance and meaning of three important words – faith, belief, and trust. We found that the dictionary definitions were lacking and that there is indeed a significant difference among these concepts. We all believe things because we can show that these are correct, but many people also have faith in things even though the veracity cannot be proven. In fact, proof that something is false will seldom change our faith, but such proof should change our belief (as long as we are rational beings).

By the time you read this, our groups would have, at our March meeting, discussed the issue of religion and the environment. All religions, such as Christianity, that place humans in the center of the universe have great difficulty in accepting the wisdom of the global ecosystem where humans are but one species. Do other species deserve moral consideration? If so, how do we make environmental decisions where moral values conflict? Are religions beneficial or harmful to the environment?

The April meeting of our discussion group is scheduled for Thursday, 21 April, at 1:30 in the afternoon. We will either continue the discussion of religion and the environment, or move to our next topic, spirituality. Can people be spiritual without a faith in a supreme being? What form does such spirituality take and how can it be expressed? More to the point, is it good for anything? Come join us. Please call COA at 526 – 6368 to sign up.
