This is done by focusing the mind, staying present and being aware of thoughts. We will be sitting in chairs and will be doing some silent/guided meditation sessions along with contemplations. No prior meditation experience is necessary. Classes will meet every other Saturday and will be guided by Ilene Venizelos. For questions or to register, please call COA at 526-6368.

Humanist & Agnostic Discussion Group

Thursday, May 19 1:30pm

The group met in March and discussed ethics of the environment. Some writers have suggested that the Christian religion, which is highly anthropocentric, is largely at fault for our environmental crisis. The conversation also drifted toward the speech given by an Imam on the Colby-Sawyer campus which many of the group attended. We discussed the differences in the eastern and western religions and how they have affected our environment.

By the time you read this, our group would have, at our April meeting, continued the discussion of religion and the environment. At the core of the discussion would have been whether there actually is or is not an environmental ethic, and whether or not this has anything to do with our religious beliefs.

The May meeting of our discussion group is scheduled for Thursday, May 19, at 1:30 in the afternoon. We will either continue the discussion of religion and the environment or move to our next issue, the need humans have for inventing gods. How are we different from all the other species in the world that would cause us alone to need gods? Come join us.

Movie & Pizza Night

Friday, May 20 5:00pm

“Big Eyes”

“Big Eyes” is based on the true story of Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz), who was one of the most successful painters of the 1950s and early 1960s. The artist earned staggering notoriety by revolutionizing the commercialization and accessibility of popular art with his enigmatic paintings of waifs with big eyes. The truth would eventually be discovered though: Keane’s art was actually not created by him at all, but by his wife, Margaret (Amy Adams). The Keanes, it seemed, had been living a lie that had grown to gigantic proportions.

Please call COA at 526-6368 to register.
