At its regular club meeting on the first Wednesday of the month, the Elkins Fish and Game Club awarded six camperships to children for summer programs at Barry Conservation Camp located at the Berlin Fish Hatchery. Attending Fish Camp will be Mason King and Hunter Jatko; attending North Country Adventure Camp will be Matthew Churchwell, Sam Boulton, and his cousin, Brett Edmunds of Virginia; attending Hunter Education will be Philip Howe.
The club has been sending children from area towns, including Andover, to camp since 1993, and these six campers bring the total sent to 121 boys and girls.
Barry Conservation Camp is operated by the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension’s 4-H program in cooperation with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. Camperships are for week-long programs which focus on fishing, shooting sports, and hunter education. “These areas of interest fit the club’s mission, and we are delighted each year to make this significant contribution to the area’s youth, to date nearly $40,000 in camperships and over $5,000 in sponsorship of the camp’s Coyote Cabin,” said Mike Gelcius, club president.
The club will hold its fourth annual Lake-a-thon on Sunday, July 3, on Pleasant Lake, where funds are raised to help with the camperships. A Cardboard Boat Regatta is held among other family-friendly activities.
