Here’s some old news from the Andover, East Andover, West Andover, Potter Place, and Cilleyville “gossip” columns of the Franklin Journal Transcript, selected by Virginia Edwards.
Andover: November 3, 1966
Book fair at Andover school will be held on November 10 at the Elementary school. The object of the book fair is to expose students and parents to what is current in the field of children’s books and to add to home libraries. Books are 25 cents to $2.95.
Mrs. Eleanor Morrill, a retired teacher of Delaware, Maryland, has moved into her folks’ home on Beech Hill.
Miss Blake’s special class held a Halloween party on the afternoon of October 31. The class has received song flutes, which they will be playing this week.
The Medical Self-Help course to help people survive in the event of a nuclear war or other national disaster, sponsored by the Andover Extension Club, finished their six-week course of two hours a week on October 27. All received certificates.
The third graders are practicing four plays which are hoped to be shown to first grades next week.
Halloween parties were held on October 31 for all four lower grades. Room mothers enjoyed all the awesome and unique costumes. The Halloween dance was well attended, and all had a good time.
Funeral services for Mrs. Effie G. Spooner, 86, who died at the White Maples Nursing Home in Andover on October 29, were held from the HL Young Memorial Home.
East Andover: November 3, 1966
The East Andover Volunteer Firemen’s annual Halloween party was held in Highland Lake Grange Hall on October 31. Games were played, and each child received a bag of candy. Children and some parents came in costume, and many prizes were given to best, funniest, etc. Many thanks to the firemen for this wonderful annual event. Everyone had a good time.
Mr. and Mrs. George W. Young Jr. and son Michael of Brunswick, Maine were Sunday guests at the home of their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Young.
Miss Prudence Mathews of Watertown, Massachusetts, is visiting with Miss Marion Steuerwald.
Miss Nancy Keniston returned home from Franklin Hospital over the weekend. Nancy had her appendix out and is doing well.
Much sympathy goes to Allen Gardner on the death of his wife on October 26; she died in her sleep. Services were held, and burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in town.
Potter Place: November 3, 1966
Miss Ruth Eichel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Eichel of Potter Place and a senior at New London High School, is taking a biochemistry course in Sunapee through the New London High School.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Eichel of Potter Place are entertaining Mrs. Eichel’s folks, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred DeGroot of Ozone Park, New York.
Andover: November 11, 1966
Deer season opened on Thursday, November 10, so hunters do be careful, Please make sure it is a deer before you shoot.
Sgt. Craig McDonald returned to his base in Fort Knox, Kentucky, after a five-day furlough with his folks.
Congratulations go out to Selectman and Mrs. William Bardsley on the birth of a girl, Christina Elizabeth, on October 31 at New London Hospital. Mother and baby returned home Monday.
Andover welcomes as new residents Mr. and Mrs. Richard Gagne who have purchased the former Kidgorff property. Mr. Gagne is a State Police officer and Mrs. Gagne is employed as a secretary at IFA in Concord.
East Andover: November 11, 1966
Reverend and Mrs. Frances Tucker, Mrs. Marie Rising, Mrs. Irene Jewett, Miss Marion Steuerwald, Mrs. Ruth Supenor, and Mrs. Eldora Walker attended World Community Day in South Danbury on November 4 at the Congregational Church.
Mrs. Frank Martin of Newport and Mrs. Helen Thomas of Weston, Massachusetts, called on Mrs. Frank Haley on November 3.
Misses Brenda and Linda Kimball visited their aunt Edith Leonard and their cousins in Montpelier, Vermont, for the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kimball went up on Sunday to bring the girls home.
The first snow storm fell on us on Sunday the 13th. Good thing it did not last too long; just enough to let us know what is to come.
Wedding anniversary congratulations go to Mr. & Mrs. William Miller III on November 11.
David Jewett has been discharged from the service; we all welcome him home. Thank you for your service.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert (Julie Rising) Sims of Hayward, California, have returned to his base after spending a few days with her folks, Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Rising, and his folks in Penacook.
The Andover Service Club workday was held at the home of Mrs. Marion O’Hare on November 2. Fourteen members were present. Gifts, aprons, etc. were made for their Christmas sale on November 12 in Proctor Chapel.
East Andover: November 17, 1966
Harold and Edna Walker of Somerville, Massachusetts, spent the long weekend with his brother and sister-in-law Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Walker.
A Christmas party will be held on December 10 at 7:30 PM at the Elementary school. Each adult is asked to bring a gift for exchange, and each parent bringing children are to bring a gift for them with their name on it.
Eleven members of Ladies Aid met at the home of Mrs. Albert Hoyt for a work day; 46 cancer dressings were made, as well as aprons and baby clothes. The next work day will be at the home of Mrs. David Hedon on December 8.
Lucky deer hunters were Allen Keyser, Francis Heath, Lauren Ford, Howard George, Erving Nelson, Joe Huntoon, and Robert McDonald.
Congratulations go to Mr. & Mrs. Robert Keyser on November 15.
Andover: November 24, 1966
Marjorie McDonald, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Allen McDonald, joined the Rainbow Girls in Franklin.
The Northern Star put on a roast beef supper for the Mason visitation on November 18.
Blackwater Grange held an early Thanksgiving program at their meeting on November 17.
Mrs. Emma Dunlop is cooking at New London Hospital part time.
Plans are underway for the annual American Legion Christmas party for all children through eight years of age, to be held at the Andover Elementary School on December 17 at 7:30 PM.
A surprise bridal shower was held for Joan Downs on November 17 at the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs Frank Downs.
Joan and Sam Young are being married on November 26. Best wishes.
Many people were on hand on November 19 at the Fire Station for the turkey benefit. Miss Cheryl Whitcomb received the door prize of a free turkey dinner. Hagen Daniels of Bristol received the .30-30 Winchester gun. Richard Deuville of Franklin got the .22 Magnum rifle. Carl Meters of Andover won the gun rack.
