Ms. Philbrook’s 6th and 7th grade students are currently simulating the Ancient Egyptian Mummification process in Social Studies class. They have researched the different processes and rituals involved and are utilizing 21st century materials to get as close to the real process as possible with some donated meat chickens. The students are fully involved in the process and are giving presentations on how the Ancient Egyptians went through the real process while simultaneously acting that out with our own class bird. The students have witnessed the chicken decrease in size and weight, change color, change in odor, etc. Their teacher has been very impressed with the connections they have been making between the past and present cultural practices.
