ROCHESTER – John D. Hackett Jr., 94, died Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at the Hyder Hospice House in Dover, N.H. He was born January 9, 1924 in Boston, Mass., son of the late John D. Hackett Sr. and Gertrude (Carter) Hackett.

As a child, John lived in Andover, N.H. At age 10, the family moved to West Epping, N.H., where John would reside for the next 60 years. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II from 1943-1945. He was a Purple Heart recipient, serving from Normandy into Germany. John retired from State of NH Highway Department as an assistant foreman. He formerly was employed for the Portsmouth Navy Shipyard, the railroad and Spaulding & Frost.

John had 46 wonderful years with his wife Theresa (Yergeau) Hackett who predeceased John in 2016. They loved to travel and they lived from 1989-2012 in Arizona. John also enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking and helping anyone that he could. John was an amazing story teller.

He was a life member of the DAV, member of the American Legion Post# 7 of Rochester and former member of the American Legion Post# 51 of Epping.

In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his first wife, Eunice Rogers; his second wife, Alma (Thorne) Hackett; daughter, Kathryn; son, Weston; step-daughter-Theresa; siblings, Chris, William, Frank, Helen, Charles and David.

He is survived by his son, Bob and Marilyn Hackett; son Dan and Diana Hackett; brother, James and Dyna; brother, George; step-children, Joanne, Ronnie, Janet, Missy, Jeanne and June; his grandchildren Michele Stevens, Rich Pevear, Tammi Cote and their families; and many step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and generations of nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: There are no calling hours. A graveside service to celebrate the lives of John and Theresa Hackett will be held on May 19, 2018 at 11 a.m., at the Prospect Cemetery, Epping, N.H. with John receiving military honors.
