Flying Monkey Performance Center presents Squirrel Nut Zippers on the Plymouth stage on Saturday, March 31 at 7:30PM. Known for vintage sounding hot jazz and swing music, the Zippers led the swing revival of the 90s. Tickets for this concert start at $35.
The Zippers are swinging back into New Hampshire after their memorable street-side performance in 2016 at The Flying Monkey. Fans will remember the power was knocked out that fateful evening in Plymouth, and the band decided to bring the music out on the sidewalk turning Main Street into Bourbon Street for the evening.
For fans of Swing, the Zippers were darlings of the 90s revival, playing way-retro hot jazz/swing of the 1920s and ’30s as well as vintage-sounding original material and dressed the part as well. The “Hell” video was unlike anything on MTV at the time, and was followed by the single and video “Put a Lid On It.”
Twenty-five years later, Jimbo Mathus and the Squirrel Nut Zippers are back on the road, albeit with some new faces. The band is touring with its new album, “Beasts of Burgundy,” which is out March 23. It will perform Saturday, March 31st at The Flying Monkey Performance Center.
Mathus, with help from new band members like multi-instrumentalist Dr. Sick (fiddle, banjo, vocals, etc.), started penning the new material last summer.
The new album fits snug into the Zippers’ catalog, Mathus says, while focusing more on one concept — the city and Burgundy Street, which runs through the French Quarter. It’s where Mathus found a lot of the band’s new lineup, as well as where its members rehearse. The beasts, he says, are the Mardi Gras crew.
“(This) is a little more intense in purpose — it’s got a lot of history woven into it from the old New Orleans.”
Indeed, the Zippers are coming to town. Be prepared for a intense ride.
Tickets for Squirrel Nut Zippers are $35, and $45 for premier seating. For more information on upcoming shows or to purchase tickets call the box office at 603-536-2551 or go online at www.flyingmonkeyNH.com.
