Through the efforts of Beth Morrill of the Sutton PTO, Nicole Densmore, music teacher, and sponsored in part by Summer Music Associates of New London honoring the generous support of the arts by Ken and Nola Aldrich, Symphony NH brought an exciting and engaging program to the Sutton Central Elementary School and the Kearsarge Regional Elementary School on Monday, April 2.
The Symphony NH String Quartet, comprised of Elliott Markow, violin; Ryo Usami, violin; Elaine Leisinger, viola; and Nathaniel Lathrop, cello performed excerpts from Mozart’s A Little Night Music and String Quartet No. 15; Haydn’s String Quartet, “The Bird;” Britten’s Simple Symphony; Bach’s Fugue No. 5; Amy Beach’s Quartet for Strings; and Dvorak’s String Quartet No. 12.
The musicians demonstrated the sounds of each instrument and the techniques of bowing and pizzicato playing. They asked the students to identify loud and soft dynamics by raising their hands when the volume increased and putting their fingers to their lips when the music was played softly. The quartet further involved students in the performance by having four of them pluck the strings of a small violin at the appropriate moment in “Pop Goes the Weasel.”
Founded in 1923, Symphony NH is New Hampshire’s oldest professional orchestra. Symphony NH offers a variety of community and education programs including free concerts at local libraries, free concert tickets to children ages 15 and under, and a community ticket program that provides free tickets to teachers and schools.
