Andover, NH-Victor Harrison Phelps , 91, passed away peacefully on  Wednesday July 18, 2018. He called the Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscawen  his home for the last 3 years.

He was born in Andover, NH on October 16, 1926, the son of Victor E. and Helen  (Davis ) Phelps. He graduated from Andover High School as class president in 1944 . He married Ella Pinard December 15, 1947 and they built their home and raised their family right in Andover. It was during one of his first jobs, driving an “order route” in Wilmot, NH, that he met Ella. They were married nearly 65 years when she passed in 2012.

He had other employment over the years, such as working for the power company in VT, on the Town of Andover road crew, some construction work, and some time employed by Proctor Academy.  Eventually he and Ella, along with partners Clyde and Shirley, owned and operated Currier & Phelps, Inc. for 42 years. That included a full service gas station and later the Currier & Phelps Village store.  We know of him being well respected in the area as an excellent mechanic.

Anyone who knew Vic might remember he loved gadgets and tinkering on gadgets from practically the first TV in Andover , CB radios, clocks, thermometers and more. He enjoyed watching baseball and basketball and hated to pass up any yard sale.

Over the years, Vic belonged to the Andover Fire Department, School Board, town basketball team, participated in the annual July 4th parade, and volunteered at the Andover Historical Society. Vic was a 75 year member of the Grange (Blackwater/Blazing Star).  He and Ella enthusiastically supported Andover town events and causes. Vic was also known for his endearing nicknames for family and friends.

Any time spent with children , grandchildren and great-grandchildren was treasured by all. Vic and Ella shared holidays with all their children as equally  as possible and went to any and all family birthday celebrations . As well, camping with Ann and Roy or traveling with Polly and Carl, were some of his favorite pastimes and the source of frequent and fond reminiscences.

He was predeceased by his wife Ella, and siblings Dorothea (Dolly) Phelps Smith, Geneva Smith Jones, and Robert Davis Phelps.

Members of his surviving family includes his three children and their spouses; Cynthia and James Alley of Londonderry, Karen and James Hanson of Andover, Douglas and Alita Phelps of Andover ; six grandchildren, Jeffrey  Alley and wife Melissa, Beth and husband Corey LeBreton, Suzanne Alley and wife Samantha Genier, Michael Hanson and wife Dr. Jennifer Holzinger, Katherine and husband Brian Cohen, and Tracey Phelps and her partner, Frank ; eight  great-grandchildren, Matthew, Benjamin, Allison L., Ella, Leo, Clara, Lucas, Allison C, and Hailey. Nieces and nephews including a special nephew and his partner, Steve Smith and Donna French and a niece Pam Daspit, who wrote notes to him faithfully for years.

He was well liked by all very often said “It doesn’t cost anything to say Hello”.
