Once again the students and staff worked together to provide a tribute to local veterans. The assembly was very well attended. The day not only gives students a chance to honor local veterans, but it also helps students learn the importance of Veterans Day. Whether the student is five years old reciting the Pledge of Allegiance or an eighth grader serving coffee and muffins… the day is treasured by the entire school community..
Helen Armstrong, an eighth grade student, sang the National Anthem after members of the Crosby-Gilbert American Legion Post #101 paraded the colors. Following Helen’s incredible rendition came a very special Pledge of Allegiance. Our kindergarten students recited the Pledge of Allegiance while our third grade classes ‘spoke’ it with sign language. This was a great opportunity for the third grade students to share their knowledge of ASL. It was impressive!
Principal Jane Slayton welcomed the veterans and their families and spoke about the importance of the day for the students and staff members of AEMS.
Seventh Grader Arienna Perry then recited “Thank a Veteran.” The poem was chosen and memorized by Arie as a way to show her gratitude for our veterans.
Mr. William Leber shared thoughts regarding the special day and its significance. Local veterans from Crosby-Gilbert American Legion Post #101 built and presented a special memorial- a “Chair of Honor” dedicated to the POW and MIA. It resides in the lobby of AEMS for the Andover community to always see and reflect upon its importance. The chair reads “POW and MIA, You are Not Forgotten.” It was constructed by local veterans and materials were donated by local businesses. The craftsmanship is superb.
Several members of the Rolling Thunder organization were present for the memorial dedication and also addressed the students and veterans. The mission of Rolling Thunder is to bring accountability for the Prisoners Of War-Missing In Action (POW/MIA) of all wars.
Following the presentation, Andover’s favorite violinist, played amazingly for the audience. Seventh grade student, Oliver Andrews, played “Ashoka Farewell” and “Amazing Grace” to a silent crowd. AEMS is fortunate to be able to call on the talents of this gifted musician.
The gym then became lively as the first grade class waved their American flags and enthusiastically sang two patriotic songs. This was followed by Caleb Moriarty’s presentation regarding the meaning of the service flag. Students in grades four and six shared poetry. Several students wrote their own poems to honor the veterans. The second grade and the fifth grade used technology to present multi-media tributes for Veterans Day. The fifth grade students shared personal messages and the second grade students thrilled the audience with their singing.
After the assembly the students cleaned up the gym and returned to classes while the veterans spent time in the Eagle Cafe where eighth grade students served and enjoyed the company of our local veterans. Families sent in fruit, cider, and baked goods for the veterans to enjoy. Coffee from JJ’s Market was donated and appreciated!
Ms. Kathy Hildebrand generously set up a table of her father’s World War II memorabilia, as she does every year. The students are always interested in the old photos, uniforms, letters, and more.
Veterans Day is always a favorite day at AEMS. This year was especially meaningful with the “Chair of Honor” presentation. Next time you are at AEMS please make sure you stop and see the memorial.
