Ann T. Hammond (“Squidge”) passed away peacefully on December 29, 2018 surrounded by family and friends at the New London Hospital. She was born and raised by her grandparents, Ernest and Loretta Jennings, in Westport, CT. After graduating from Staples High School and Centenary Junior College in Hackettstown, New Jersey she headed off to New York City to work at Time, Inc. as an Executive Secretary. It was on a blind date set up by her roommate where Squidgie Titzell met the handsome Columbia student, recently back from Korea, named Frank. Frank and Squidge were married for 58 years.
In 1963 Frank convinced his bride to leave the big city and settle in rural New Hampshire so he could pursue a career in teaching. It was in New London where they resided for 55 years raising their only daughter, Bebe, and becoming active members of the community giving to so many through their work and their time.
Squidge was the Court Clerk in the New London District Court for 20 years retiring in 1997. She tirelessly supported Frank in his role as Executive Director of the Lake Sunapee Protective Association over many summers. The two of them running the LSPA out of a small office in their house. She was active in many different organizations, always willing to lend a helping hand and volunteer for something. Her greatest joy was being able to care for her grandson, Henry, one day a week after she retired and then later her granddaughter, Megan. Squidge was devoted to her family and her family was devoted to her. Especially her son in law, Jim and her cousins, Abby and Barbara.
Squidge’s family was the most important thing to her, and not just her immediate family but also the many others who considered her to be their surrogate mother. She was kind to everyone and any time she met someone new she made it a point to know their whole life story within five minutes of meeting them in her very caring way.
She leaves her husband, Frank Hammond of New London, NH. Daughter Bebe and husband Jim Casey also of New London, NH. Grand children Henry and Megan Casey of New London, NH. Sister in law, Patricia S. Hammond of Orford, NH. Cousins Barbara Webster of Columbia, SC and Abby and Tony Booth of Andover, NH.
The family would like to thank the incredible staff at the New London Hospital for taking such good care of her during her many stays over the past few years. They would also like to express their gratitude to the many nurses and LNA’s from the Lake Sunapee VNA who took care of her over the last 3 years, especially Kandy.
And to all of you who knew her, we ask that you raise a glass to Squidgie wherever you may be.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Lake Sunapee Region VNA, P.O. Box 2209, 107 Newport Road, New London, NH 03257.
