General Election 2020 – Candidate for State Representative Merrimack 1

Democratic – Ken D. Wells

By Ken Wells

As your Representative, I have worked hard on issues that affect us all.

First among these is the unfair and unconstitutional way that New Hampshire collects revenue from property taxes, taxing people living in different towns at unequal rates for essentially identical properties. The state’s habit of “downshifting” its constitutional requirement “to provide adequate education” onto towns drives our taxes in our towns up.

I’m proud of my votes to help lower our property taxes and significantly increase funding for our towns, our schools, and our University system. I helped pass a 2020-2021 state budget bringing $459,000 in tax relief to Andover, Danbury, and Salisbury. I voted for Paid Family Leave to help families cope — especially vital during this pandemic. I wrote a bill to give loggers equal protection to landowners under the law, and two bills to get the sneaky influence of “dark money” out of the New Hampshire government. My speeches helped pass bills reducing both pollution and people’s energy bills, and bills to help local energy enterprises compete against subsidized fracked gas from out of state.

I brought people together in spite of their initial positions of conflict. My initiatives are driving bipartisan efforts for broadband access for all people in New Hampshire, and a pilot program for an industry-sponsored apprenticeship program, beginning in high school and ending with employment and an associate’s degree, without student debt.

I respectfully ask for your vote so I can continue to represent your best interests in the House of Representatives in the upcoming session.
