Grace (Thomas) Guptill, 96, died Saturday, April 20, 2013, at Presidential Oaks in Concord.
She was born in Northfield on June 15, 1916, the daughter of William Bruce and Florence (Flint) Thomas. Mrs. Guptill spent her early years in Northfield and later moved to Plymouth, where she graduated from high school and was in the first class to receive a bachelor’s degree in 1936 from Plymouth State College.
She did substitute teaching in the 30s and 40s and then took a position in Gilmanton Corner for three years. After that she taught in Franklin until she turned 60, at which time she decided to be a nanny. Mrs. Guptill worked in the Concord area for 20 years staying with five different families.
She lived in Northfield from 1944 to 1957, spent 30 years in East Andover, and then had lived in Concord for the past 25 years.
She liked to read and do crossword puzzles. Mrs. Guptill stayed very active and attended concerts and lectures well into her 90s.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leo Guptill, and a grandson, Michael Guptill. Members of her family surviving include two sons, Thomas Guptill of Concord, and Albion Guptill of Zephyrhills, Florida; a stepson, Colin Guptill of Tucson, Arizona; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main St., New London, on Thursday, April 25, 2013, from 5 to 7 PM A funeral service will be held Friday, April 26, 2013, at 11 AM at the Andover Congregational Church in East Andover. Burial will follow in Lake View Cemetery, East Andover.
