Majel M. Hawes, 92, passed away Thursday afternoon, May 6, 2021 at the Golden View Health Care Center, Meredith, after a long illness, with her daughter and son-in-law by her side.

Majel, known to many as Polly, was born in Pittsburg, New Hampshire, on June 27, 1928. Majel was the daughter of Stuart and Hazel (Danforth) Haynes. She was raised on Hill Road, one of Stuart and Hazel’s ten children.

Majel attended Pittsburg School where she developed a love of science and history. She would spend hours reading her encyclopedias.

Majel was a lifetime resident of Pittsburg. It was where she married Russell and raised their two children. From 1953 to 1971 she and her husband owned and operated a successful business, Camp Driftwood on Back Lake. She often said her contribution to making vacations pleasurable for guests was to have spotless cabins for them to enjoy. After retiring from Camp Driftwood she and Russell built their home on Back Lake where she resided until her health declined.

Majel’s pride and joy was her family. She loved spending time with her family and treasured their visits, especially from her grandchildren. Majel was looking forward to the birth of her second great great grandchild who will be arriving in June.

Surviving family members include her daughter Sophie Dube and husband Yves of Alton; daughter-in-law Wanda Hawes of Concord. She is also leaving behind grandchildren David Hawes and wife Lee-Ann of Andover; Marie Rienzo and husband David of Alton; Michael Hawes and April Begosh of Webster; Jaime Cochrane and husband Ryan of Hooksett, along with six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild: a sister Beverly Jenkins and husband Barry of Colebrook; many nieces and nephews, and her extended family Forrest and Linda Covill of Pittsburg, New Hampshire.

She was predeceased by her husband Russell; son Stephen Hawes; eight of her siblings, Ramona Bilski, Warren Haynes, Bradley Haynes, Waneta Thibeault, Gwendolyn Bunnell, Rowena Hann, Skip Haynes, and Wayne Haynes.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
