The Danbury Country Store, located at the junction of Rts. 4 and 104 in Danbury reopened on May 1st, 2013 after a major renovation.
Operated as a store since 1875, this business has long been a fixture on the highway serving the local communities and the traveling public with food, beverages, gasoline, diesel fuel and convenience items.
The Danbury Country Store features a deli, full convenience store foods and beverages, fresh coffee and tea, new gas and diesel pumps as well as unique country store items that are ever changing. NH Lottery is available as an ATM machine.
It features a full deli/food service area with Boar’s Head meats and cheeses and Green Mountain Coffee. Morning food service includes fresh baked goods from the local Huntoon Farm bakery and breakfast sandwiches. Lunch offers sandwiches and soups made fresh for you as well as daily specials. Pizza and take home meals are also ready for you. Take it with you or relax for a while and enjoy your meal with a newspaper or a friend at one of our specially crafted tables, made from old wooden barrels that were used in the store years ago.
Local and traditional country store items include a wheel of sharp cheddar cheese, maple syrup, honey, fudge, photos, books, and baked goods that are the product of local folks.
The new gas and diesel pumps offer pay-at-the-pump and include three blends of gasoline as well as on-road and off-road diesel fuel. They are now located on the North side of the building and can be accessed from Rt. 4 or North Road.
The renovation effort began in January and work progressed throughout the Spring. The renovation included a new foundation under most of the building; new septic systems; 20,000 gallon gas and diesel tanks were; all new plumbing and heating, and a total overhaul of the store interior. This includes the addition of the new deli/food service area and a public bathroom. A new entrance on the Grafton side has been constructed which is handicapped accessible.
Throughout the renovation, care was taken to preserve the historical features of this landmark. The inclusion of the original counter, which is over 100 years old, and the old fashioned candy counter from the same era, help to preserve the character of the store.
The exterior of the building has been painted, with the store being a light yellow, and the barn a brick red. These traditional New England colors are warm and welcoming.
The store is located at a crossroads for the traveling public and serves the local area residents and visitors. It serves as a welcome center for the Northern Rail Trail which is located just across Route 4, and has become a popular destination for bikers, walkers, and snowmobilers.
The store is managed by Audrey (Phelps) Pellegrino, who is a life long resident of Danbury and whose family, Myrl and June Phelps, owned the store from 1968 to 1977. Pellegrino recently completed a 20 year teaching career in Andover, N.H. with Kindergarten students.
Her passion for the store is evident and her excitement is shared by the overwhelming local support.
The Danbury Country Store will be open 7 days a week, opening at 6:00AM, except a bit later on Sundays. The phone number is 768-3100 and you can “Like” the store on Facebook.
