Marion Lindsey Butson Allen – March 25, 2023

Marion Lindsey Butson Allen, 85, longtime Wilmot resident died of congestive heart failure on March 25, 2023 at Peabody Place in Franklin.  She was born Marion Louise Butson in Haverhill, on July 20, 1937, to the late Vena Hatch and Perley Butson.  Marion attended Woodsville High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from UNH and a Masters in Library Science from URI.  Her 35 year career as a librarian included; New London Hospital Medical Library, Colby-Sawyer College Library and New Hampshire Hospital’s Dorothy M. Breene Memorial Library.

Marion was the New Hampshire representative for Clan Lindsay USA for 26 years at the New Hampshire Highland Games.  As an avid hiker, she had climbed all 48 4000-foot mountains in New Hampshire, and five in Maine before reaching the age of 55.  Marion was a long-standing member of the Kearsarge Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Andover where she served in many capacities and was a member of the League of Women Voters, Wilmot Community Association, Wilmot Garden Club, Wilmot Democratic Committee, Wilmot Conservation Commission Chairperson, as well as the Wilmot Ladies Aid Society.  She loved to read and garden.

Marion is survived by her daughter, Belinda (Allen) Nerl and husband John of Londonderry, her daughter Heather (Allen) Hietala of Asheville, North Carolina, son Bruce Allen and wife Patricia Shaw Allen of New London, daughter Jennifer (Allen) Giles and husband Charles Giles of New London, brother John Butson and wife Bonnie of Woodsville, sister Jane Lowell Chroniak and husband John of Green Valley, Arizona, and Joan Lowell of Peterborough, grandchildren; Kristof and Gabrielle Nerl, Jeremy and Emily Nerl, Abigail Allen, Duncan and Rhys Van Etten, and numerous nieces and nephews  She was predeceased by her parents and stepfather Lloyd Lowell, her brother Robert Butson and his wife Margaret and her ex-spouse Peter H. Allen.

Arrangements: Calling hours at Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main Street, New London will be held on Thursday, April 27, from 4 – 6 PM.  A Memorial Service is Scheduled for Friday April 28 at 11 AM at the First Congregational Church, Wilmot Center.  A burial ceremony will be held at a later date in Newbury, Vermont. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pope Memorial SPCA, Concord-Merrimack County, and Planned Parenthood of Northern New England.
