Verne E. Barrett – May 19, 2023

Verne E. Barrett, 88, of Scythe Shop Road, Elkins, died Friday, May 19, 2023 at the Concord Hospital.

He was born in New London on November 20, 1934, the son of Harry and Florence M. (Hunt) Barrett.

Verne graduated from New London High School in 1953, and earned an Associate’s Degree from Bentley College in 1955, working  briefly in Boston for several years before serving in the United States Army from 1957-1959. They eventually moved to Elkins in 1965. He worked for the Patriot Investment Company in Concord from 1961-1998 while working for Phil Maher as an accountant, and later as the sole owner, retiring in 2000.  About a year ago, Verne moved to Woodcrest Village in New London where he received excellent attention from his caregivers in the Courtyard. During the past three weeks, he resided at Havenwood-Heritage Heights in Concord, where he was surrounded by a caring and attentive staff.  He and his late wife, Judy, spent many winters in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Verne was an active member of The First Baptist Church of New London. He was all about family.  Attending sporting events, concerts, and ceremonies for his daughters and granddaughters was such a source of pride and joy for Verne, and he was so quietly proud of his family.  He also enjoyed being with his siblings and nieces and nephews, and attending as many of their events as was possible. The first weekend in August was a sacred time for the Barrett Clan to get together and was eagerly anticipated each year.  He was a hardworking, good natured, simple man.  An outdoor person, Verne enjoyed golfing, gardening, and working in his yard.

Active in the community, Verne was involved with many organizations and committees, including the New London Planning Board, the New London Service Organization, King Solomon’s Lodge #14 F and AM, Bektash Temple, Scottish Rite Body in the Valley of Nashua; Lions Club, March of Dimes where he received the Boot Award, New Hampshire Association of Public Accountants, National Society of Accountants, New London Little League Coach, New London Boys Club, New London Archives, and The Order of The Eastern Star. He enjoyed antique cars, and volunteered at the Ice House Museum.

His wife, Judy, died in 2020. He is also predeceased by his parents and siblings, Horace, Elizabeth Palmer, Robert, Pearl Fitzgerald, George, Harry, Pauline O’Neil, Fred, Jane Shackett, Ruth Gagner, Eleanor Hurd, and Bruce.  He is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Jill and Winfried Feneberg of New London, and Heidi and James Marshall of Hopkinton; two granddaughters, Hannah and her husband, Jake Kaplan of Portsmouth, and Brittany Marshall of Winona Lake, Indiana; three siblings, Donald Barrett of New London, Sherman Barrett of Concord, and Mary Jean and her husband, Frank Wibel of Omaha, Nebraska; a sister-in-law, Nance Barrett of Andover, New Hampshire; nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins.

Friends may call at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main Street, New London, NH on Thursday, May 25, 2023 from 5 – 6 PM.  A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 26, 2023 at 11 AM at The First Baptist Church, 461 Main Street, New London.  Burial will follow in Proctor Cemetery, Andover.
