Loring Oakley Ford “Spunk” died unexpectedly in his home on Friday, June 23, 2023 in Potter Place, NH at the age of 74.
Spunk was born on November 16, 1948 in New London, NH to Leslie and Dorothy Ford.
He graduated from New London High School in 1967 and enlisted in the United States Army directly thereafter. He served proudly in the United States Army 1st Air Cavalry, fought in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969 and received the Army Commendation Medal for his heroism.
After returning home from Vietnam, he began working for Clayton A. Miller Plumbing and Heating in Elkins, NH, and worked there until he retired from full time status in 2010 and part time status in 2018.
Spunk is survived by his daughters, Lacey Ford-Ure and Lisa Ford-Sargent, and his son Andrew Palmer; his three wonderful grandchildren, Ava Ure, Harrison Sargent, and Rowan Palmer; his brother Lance and his wife Sue; his brother Larry Ford and his wife Peggy; his sister Linda Marcotte and her husband Chuck; and his sister Lizabeth “Buffy” Thurston; and many nieces, nephews, and their children.
Spunk is predeceased by his parents, Leslie and Dorothy Ford; a brother and sister-in-law, Skip and Linda Ford; two brothers-in-law, Joe Hodges and David Thurston, and a sister-in-law, Carol Ford.
His children remember him as a hardworking father who was known by many in his town. He was an outdoorsman enjoying fishing, golfing and snowmobiling. He was a craftsman with his hands and loved woodworking projects. He had an extensive stamp collection, loved doing puzzles, was a collector of Farmall tractors at one time and had several antique engines he would run each year at Andover Historical Day.
He was an active and dedicated member of The American Legion, The Lions Club, The Andover Historical Society, Veteran of Foreign War member, participated in Musterfield Farm Day and volunteered for many years at the Sutton Fire Department.
Calling hours are scheduled for Friday, July 28th from 5 to 7 PM at Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main Street, New London, NH.
A private ceremony will be held for family only on Monday, July 31 at the VA Cemetery in NH.
A Celebration of life will be held Saturday, August 5 from 10 until noon at the Sutton Fire Department.
