As written by Walter himself, we share this obituary.
Walter Willis Walker, of Wilmot, born on October 18, 1930, at New London Hospital, with two other boys at the same time, died on July 15, 2023, at Mountain Ridge Center in Franklin. He outlived Bill and Raymond!
Walter spent all of his time at his Grandfather’s farm on Walker Brook Road in South Danbury until after he finished high school. Then two of his best friends and he took off to work their way through the United States, which they did, and it ended up being published in a booklet called “The Great Adventure — On The Road In 1949”. Once home they found jobs until the Korean War started and then all three enlisted in the Air Force. Walter’s last assignment was to Thule Air Force Base on the northern tip of Greenland. This led to a very strange way of life until he returned to the States and was honorably discharged.
While in the Air Force, Walter gave up the job of being a military cop, which he enjoyed, and went to a machinist school, courtesy of the Air Force. He continued that work up to his discharge and once out, he tried to find work as a machinist but had no luck. So he went back to the building contractor he had worked for and eventually ended up with his own building business. At one time he was the best finish carpenter in the area and his boss got jobs by promising Walter would do all the inside finish work!
Shortly after his discharge from the Air Force, he met Judith Schucker, a nurse at New London Hospital. They married and had four great children. Judith passed away in January 2021.
Walter had a green thumb and enjoyed raising fruit and vegetables and sharing them with family and friends.
Walter is survived by his children — Wade Walker and his wife Debbie of Sutton; Daniel Walker of South Danbury; Holly Walker and her husband Luigi Minoletti of Sutton; and Nathan Walker and his wife Kathryn of New London; three granddaughters, Megan, Lindsey and her fiancé Cody, and Annie; one great-granddaughter, Hazel; his sister Margery Piper of Laconia; his brother Daniel Walker of Lemington, Vermont; nieces, a nephew, and cousin Nancy Langley of Wilmot.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mountain Ridge Center in Franklin for their care of Walter the past year.
A service celebrating his life will be held at the First Congregational Church of Wilmot U.C.C., 19 N. Wilmot Road, on Friday, August 4, 2023 at 11 AM.
Donations in Walter’s name may be made to The Wilmot Historical Society, P.O. Box 97, Wilmot, NH 03287.
