WindowDressers Project Moves Along Smoothly

Inserts built in "Community Build" sessions

Press Release

Interested in a warmer home and lower fuel costs in the coming winter? If the answer is yes, there are still a few days left in which area residents can sign up for the local WindowDressers project, in which volunteers will produce custom-made insulating window inserts for local homes.

Now in its sixth month of outreach, the local, multi-town project is moving along smoothly, with over 20 potential customers who have requested nearly 200 inserts. The inserts will be assembled by volunteers in “Community Build” sessions to be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in New London in November and made available for self-installation by customers.

The deadline for requesting inserts is September 15. Recruitment of volunteers for the “Community Build” stage of the project, which will take place on November 10 through 15, is now underway. There are evening and weekend opportunities to help assemble the inserts, and training will be provided.

When installed, the inserts, custom-made for each window, will lower home heating costs by sharply reducing both heat from leaving the house and winter cold from entering it. Cost per window is estimated to be between $30 and $100, depending on window size.

Residents of these towns are invited to participate: Andover, Bradford, Newbury, New London, Springfield, Sunapee, Sutton, Warner, and Wilmot. Two local-area nonprofits, Kearsarge Climate Action (KCA) and Kearsarge Neighborhood Partners (KNP), are managing the project, under the guidance of a third non-profit, WindowDressers of Maine.

For information on how to sign up to receive inserts, residents of the nine towns included in the project are invited to contact KCA’s Joe Kubit (see above). Grant money from the New England-based Grassroots Grow Fund has been awarded to KCA for the project, to provide up to 10 inserts for free or at reduced cost, to assist customers with limited resources.
