Once again, the Eighth Grade class at AE/MS was given an opportunity to attend Nature’s Classroom in Massachusetts. From September 18-22, students experienced a fully immersive and highly engaging environmental education program (coupled with a strong team-building and character development component) that makes Nature’s Classroom a very meaningful and powerful experience for students. Last year was the first year for this grant funded program, and the students who participated returned as an even closer group than they were when they left. The growth these students showed in one short week was noticeable by everyone, as they returned with increased confidence, sense of independence, and maturity that helped them prepare for their final year at AE/MS and their future high school experiences.
The current eighth grade class shined as their school expected they would. They took classes while they were there, including one on shark dissection. They participated in a night hike and had to track food waste throughout the week, giving out what was called an “Ort report” at the end of each meal. Although there were plenty of nerves to go around when they left, by the time they returned they were all happy to have had the experience.
This trip is very likely to become a regular opportunity for students at AE/MS. Jennifer Bent, Middle School Special Education Coordinator, was able to chaperone the trip this year and said, “Nature’s Classroom takes technology away and gives students a chance to really bond in a genuine way.” Students and chaperones all reported tears of sadness when the trip came to an end. Although they were happy to return home to their own beds, they didn’t want the adventure to end.
Later this year, this group will travel together once again and head to Acadia for hiking, a water cruise, and some white water rafting. These eighth graders are certain to have an eventful final year at AE/MS.
