Dear Proctor Community,
We appreciate the outpouring of support and best wishes for Brian after his announcement two weeks ago. Individuals who choose Proctor, do not just choose to “work” at Proctor, but they immerse themselves into the community, building deep connections with each other and with students. Brian modeled this for all of us, and his commitment to Proctor will be missed. I would like to share more with you regarding how we will be moving forward in the months ahead with the appointment of an interim head of school for the 2024-2025 school year and the launch of a search process for Proctor’s next head of school who will begin this role in July of 2025.
The Board is pleased to announce that Steve Wilkins, P’02, ‘05 will serve as Proctor’s interim Head of School beginning on July 1. An experienced independent school administrator and teacher who has led three different schools, each committed to innovative teaching practices and diverse learners — Jemicy School (1986-1995), Proctor Academy (1995-2005), and The Carroll School (2005-2021) — Steve holds a Master’s Degree in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and an undergraduate degree from Colgate University. He is currently serving on the faculty at The Waring School in Beverly, Massachusetts, and as an Adjunct Professor at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts, where he is teaching a graduate course in neuroscience and education. Steve has served on Proctor’s Board of Trustees for the past four years, and he has led the school’s strategic visioning and planning work as the Chair of the Institutional Advancement Committee. Steve is not only deeply connected to Proctor’s history, but keenly aware of the strategic direction of the school’s future. He and his wife, Sarah, hold Proctor as a very special place in their hearts, and are honored to return to Andover this summer.
During his tenure as Proctor’s Head of School, Steve led the School on a decade of self-analysis, studying everything from sleep needs and the academic schedule to gender issues in classrooms while also leading Proctor through a major capital campaign. His deep knowledge of Proctor, connections with alumni, past parents, understanding of the independent school educational landscape, and experience leading independent schools will allow Proctor’s leadership and administrative teams to focus on the daily work of leading the school while we launch a search for our next Head of School.
Steve shares, “Sarah and I view this interim role as an opportunity to give back to a community that has been so significant to our family; there is no other school to which we would agree to serve in an interim capacity. The role of an interim head is to build a bridge from Brian’s leadership to the next era. As interim, the job is to listen carefully to members of the Proctor community who dearly love this place and to communicate those thoughts to the next Head of School. To us, there is nowhere else like Proctor.”
Additionally, the Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that current parent and Board member, Kate Krehbiel P’23, ’25, ‘27, will lead the search committee for Proctor’s next Head of School. This search committee will be formed in the weeks ahead. We will continue to update the Proctor community on the transition and progress related to this process.
Please join me in welcoming Steve and Sarah back to the Proctor community.
Sincerely,
Travis Warren ‘91, P’18, ‘19, ‘23
Chair of the Board of Trustees
