The Loons Are Nesting Again

The Loons on Highland Lake began nesting the week before Father’s Day.

The Loons on Highland Lake began nesting the week before Father’s Day. This year’s nest site is on the west side of the island and just north of the big rock. This makes the nest especially vulnerable to wave activity. Wake boating and tubing was seen to cause a near washout to the nest over that weekend. We can only hope that our lake community and/or friendly neighbors will reach out to those folks and inform them of the loon nest. There is not much more that can be done.

Buoy lines and signage have been put out. Caution lines are on the island in the area surrounding the site. Just as a reminder- dogs are not allowed on the island. If all goes well, loon chicks should hatch around July 11th.

The eagle nest can be viewed easily from a boat or from the shore. The nest is in one of the tallest pines on the island. Ally Betters Resch has set along the link for viewing her photos. She will add new ones as the summer unfolds! photos.app.goo.gl/bLGcKKdHqpYSwqqAA.
