It was reported in the last issue of The Beacon that our loon pair had begun nesting off the island and near the big rock. Unfortunately, during the last week of June, the adults abandoned the nest. This happened following the Sunday night (June 23) of hurricane warnings that resulted in heavy rain and winds. The eggs were not washed out of the nest but likely they got wet. After several days of observation by loon biologist Leo Dutkewych, the eggs were picked up.
Following this failed attempt, there was a window of opportunity for the pair to nest again, but this has not happened. The pair will continue to be present on the lake- enjoying a summer of leisure. Recently, a third loon has been seen coming and going on the lake. Loons are known to visit other lakes throughout the season.
The Bald Eagle nest atop the highest pine on the island has stolen the show this year! The eagle chick can now be seen perched outside the nest. It won’t be long before it takes flight.
