Mary Lyn Ray explores children's love of nature

By Laurie Zimmerman
Mary Lyn Ray’s new book, When You Find the Right Rock, celebrates the universal urge to collect rocks.

Celebrated author Mary Lyn Ray, of Danbury, has received numerous accolades, including Amazon’s Editor’s Pick for Best Children’s Books in 2024, for her just-released When You Find the Right Rock, with delightful illustrations by artist Felicita Sala. What could be better, in The Granite State, after all, than an award-winning children’s book about rocks?

In her winsome new work, Ray captures the beauty of nature and its fascination for children, as she explores the relationship young ones have for that most universal impulse — the collection of special rocks. When You Find the Right Rock‘s target audience is preschool/kindergarten age, but as someone who cannot resist picking up interesting rocks wherever I go, I find the poetry of the text, the charming illustrations, and the subject matter irresistible at my age. I am thrilled to have this treasure to give to my grandchildren for the holidays this year!

Mary Lyn Ray is a children’s author, a conservationist, and a historic preservationist. She has written dozens of books and received nearly as many awards for her work. She is also the indefatigable President of At Eagle Pond, Inc, the nonprofit established to preserve Eagle Pond Farm in Wilmot, home of renowned poets Donald Hall and Jane Kenyon.

When You Find the Right Rock is available at Morgan Hill Bookstore in New London.
