Wilmot Historical Society Petitions to Buy Land

Vote for Articles 31 and 32 at Town Meeting

Press release

WILMOT — The Wilmot Historical Society (WHS) has long outgrown its space in the Town Office at 9 Kearsarge Valley Road. The WHS has placed a petitioned warrant article (#31) on the list of warrants for Town Meeting this year, asking the Town to allow them to purchase two acres of Town-owned land on Pine Hill Road.

If approved, the Society will pay all costs for a survey that would be necessary to determine boundary locations. All costs to acquire this land will be borne by the WHS.

The land in question is a wooded portion on the west end of Pine Hill Cemetery attached to a .4-acre piece at the intersection of Pine Hill Road and Route 11. It is not an ideal spot for a residential home, but well-suited for the new Historical Society building.

A recent bequest from a former Wilmot resident has made it possible to build a historically designed building in that location, which would be accessible and ideal for their purposes. The benefits to the Town, if the Historical Society vacates their current space in the Town Office, would include: gaining much-needed space to reconfigure the interior of the Town Office, and providing more file space and safer access and egress to the building.

Other benefits of a new building include the Town’s having access to a climate controlled archival space, if they choose; adequate and safe space to store Wilmot-related historical documents; and enhancement of the Town’s public image by having an historically designed building in that part of Wilmot Flat Village.

It is important that all registered voters in Wilmot attend the Town Meeting on March 13 and vote for warrant articles #31 and #32, to support the efforts of the Wilmot Historical Society in keeping Wilmot’s history alive and accessible to the public.
