Andover Libraries: Through the Reading Glasses

By Janet Moore, Andover Libraries Trustee

The biggest event of the year is coming, and your libraries are in the thick of it. On July 3 – yes, that’s Wednesday, the 3rd of July – the Stone Chapel on the Village Green will host the annual Library Book Sale from 4 to 7 PM for townspeople only. The next day, the Library Book Sale will be open to one and all from 8 AM to 2 PM. If you want first crack at a fine selection of reading materials, come on Wednesday, July 3.

Immediately following the locals’ event on July 3, we’ll pull out the chairs and gather ’round Don Watson, folk singer and guitarist and family entertainer. He will gladly receive donations and certainly expect kids and grown-ups alike to join in the singing merriment.

Want to try something new for summer reading? Sure you do, so go ahead and ask for Neil Gaiman’s latest, Ocean at the End of the Lane. At barely 200 pages, written for adults but narrated by children, it fits perfectly into the summer reading category of “Thoughtful gothic with a twist.”

Not your idea of sun and relaxation? Try it anyway; Gaiman is a prize-winning author who writes proper magic, the kind that children experience in its full force before they grow out of its wonder and appeal. Stardust and The Graveyard Book, which won the Newbery Prize for children’s literature, might tickle your fancy, too.
