At 7:30 PM on Friday, July 19, The Flying Monkey is excited to present the Devil Makes Three. Known for their vintage take on American blues and roots with a punky attitude, their live performances are always high energy. New England’s own Hot Day at the Zoo will open the night with their progressive “Zoograss.” Tickets for this concert are $20.

Some bands strive to form an intimate rapport with their audiences. Pete Bernhard, guitarist and vocalist for The Devil Makes Three, says his group simply can’t avoid having one.

“The nature of being in a band with no drums means the crowd is participating, whether you want them to or not,” he said, laughing. No drums means they can’t drown out offstage noise or command attention. They have to earn it.

Fortunately they’re pretty good at that. A writer for the East Bay Express wrote that when the California trio rips into a tune, “it tears it apart with a sweat-drenched energy that jerks people out of their seats and makes drinks jitter across the table and crash to the floor. The trio may play acoustic instruments, but its post-punk frenzy of ragtime, folk, blues, and primitive country generates enough electricity to solder the change in your pants into a smoking lump.”

Now that’s hot stuff. For its part, the group promises “a slightly punky perspective on vintage American blues … Laced with elements of ragtime, country, folk and rockabilly.”

He’s looking forward to Friday, when The Devil Makes Three will play in Plymouth for their debut on the Flying Monkey Stage. Regional favorites and purveyors of progressive bluegrass, Hot Day At The Zoo will get the party started.

“For me, it’s mostly about the songwriting,” he said. “I hope that people take the songs home with them…and our live show, I think it’s better than our record, personally. It’s certainly going to be a lot faster, more energetic,” Pete said.

Tickets to the Devil Makes Three concert are $20 in advance, and $25 on the day of the show. For more information on upcoming shows or to purchase tickets call the box office at 536-2551 or visit FlyingMonkeyNH.com.
