Here’s some old news from the Andover, East Andover, West Andover, Potter Place, and Cilleyville “gossip” columns of the Franklin Journal Transcript, selected by Heather Makechnie.
October 3, 1963
Services were held Sunday afternoon for Miss Ella Carr, 89, at the Proctor Chapel in Andover. Burial was in Proctor Cemetery. Miss Carr died at her home last Friday after a long illness. She was a lifelong resident of Andover, and graduated from Radcliff College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Prior to retirement she was librarian at the New Hampshire State Library in Concord. She was a charter member of Ragged Mountain Chapter No 62, OES, Andover, and a member of Blackwater Grange and the Unitarian Church. Members of the family include a brother, John P. Carr, Winchester, Massachusetts; nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins.
Anna Roberts drove Mrs. Stella Thompson, Mrs. Elaine, Graves and Daisy Eastman over to New Hampton to visit Bamby Monroe. They found her real well.
Vesper services will be held October 6 at the Andover Congregational Church. This will make it possible for a great many who cannot attend church on Sunday morning at 9:30 AM to attend in the evening. The services will be one half hour in length from 7 to 7:30 PM, early enough for all children to attend with their parents.
A much-needed rain came to us on Sunday. Many people were sure pleased, as wells are low or dry.
Andover Community Service Club will hold guest night October 9 with a Potluck supper at 6:30 in the Unitarian Church. Lawrence Rising will talk on and show his gems.
The Andover Extension group held its September meeting at the home of Mrs. Everett Decatur. The topic for discussion was “Good Grooming,” under the direction of Mrs. Aurore Carbonneau, representative from Houle’s House of Beauty, and Mrs. Gil of Montreal, world famous beauty consultant and chief make-up artist for Canadian television. Officers for the year are Mrs. Clyde Currier, president; Mrs. Everett Decatur, vice-president; Mrs. Don Buswell, secretary/treasurer; and Mrs. Amos Johnson, publicity.

The annual Nurse’s Rummage sale was very successful. Those on the committee helping were Mrs. Victor E. Phelps, Mrs. Henry Power, Mrs. Ralph Chaffee, Mrs. John Graves, and Miss Elizabeth Dodge. Additional committee members were Mrs. Eliza Buzzell, Mrs. Dolly Smith, Mrs. Ella Phelps, Mrs. Polly Richard, and Miss Idella Farnum. Many thanks go to all who helped to make the sale a success, as the money is used for needy families.

A Sabin Oral Vaccine Clinic for Type III will be held at the Andover High School on Tuesday, October 22 from 5 to 6:30 PM. Due to the outbreak of Type III Polio in Canada, New Hampshire Public Department of Health is urging everyone to get the vaccine.
While wells are drying up and the land is becoming more parched and with each minute of daylight, Governor King has imposed a statewide woodland ban, under the direction of William H. Messeck, Division of Resources Development, which provides for full prosecution to the maximum allowed by law of any person found in violation of any of the safety rules for prevention of fires.
According to Franklin Fire Chief Moise Mercier, the next 72 hours are critical and extreme caution should be used by everyone working on the outside lest some careless error should set off the explosive tinderbox that could devastate Franklin and the surrounding communities.
Keep Children Out of the Woods! Yesterday afternoon Franklin firemen averted what could have been a serious woods fire when they controlled an incipient blaze in the woods behind the Twin Maples just off of the Hill Road. The fire was started by children playing around an old camp.
Firemen and equipment from Andover, Salisbury, Franklin, and East Andover were called to Dalphond Brothers Saw Mill October 8th in the evening. The mill was burned to the ground. Much credit goes to the firemen for saving the buildings close by.
The Regal Theatre will be showing the first James Bond film adventure by Ian Fleming, Dr. No, starring Sean Connery as James Bond, Agent 007.

Firemen were called last week to a small fire at the home of Elaine Graves.
