On Thursday, October 17, at 6:30 PM at the Highland Lake Grange Hall in East Andover, the Andover Historical Society will hold a dessert and coffee social followed by a speaker at 7 PM. Sarah Smith, our speaker, will talk about the subject of her book, They Sawed Up a Storm.
Here’s a brief overview:
After the hurricane of 1938 a lot of logs were stored in water for sawing up later. With many men away at war, women became more and more a part of the work force. In 1942, a group of New Hampshire women operated a saw mill on the shores of Turkey Pond in Concord.
Sarah has researched this little-known slice of history. Her talk will include a Powerpoint presentation, and her book will be available to buy afterwards.
Sarah Smith is an Extension professor and specialist, Forest Industry, at the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension, a post she has held since 1989. She has worked as a hardwood lumber inspector, a teacher, and a door and trim carpenter.
This promises to be a terrific evening! Please join us, and bring a dessert to share if you can.
