We have welcomed a new group of students and welcomed back many others at East Andover Village Preschool (EAVP) for our 2013-2014 school year. Over the past few weeks, we have gotten to know our new environment, new friends, and, for some, our new teachers.
Our activities have allowed us to explore the literacy concepts of retelling familiar stories and songs with Five Green and Speckled Frogs, Mrs. Wishy Washy, and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom; identifying and recognizing our names and letters in our names; along with sharing our thoughts and ideas in a group setting.
Math games such as Candyland and Hi Ho Cherry O have offered us opportunities to work on color identification, counting, and one-to-one correspondence. We have used pattern and shape blocks that have allowed us to explore spatial relationships along with identifying and naming the various shapes.
Science observations have been made over the month as the group was introduced to magnifying glasses, creating substances such as oobleck and playdough, and exploring in the water table.
One component of our curriculum is the new addition of following the Early Sprouts Curriculum put in place at Keene State College. During the last spring and summer, we planted and tended to beans, tomatoes, bell peppers, carrots, and Swiss chard.
We have been successful in growing some of the vegetables and are beginning the exploration and cooking process of the curriculum. We will begin by making honey mustard dip to eat with cherry tomatoes and bell pepper sand castle couscous.
In the afternoons, we are joined by school age children for our afterschool program. There have been various activities, from making apple crisp and apple sauce to experimenting with fizzy pictures and salt with watercolors.
On Sports Days, we have practiced our soccer skills and learned a new game called Spud. Other days, we focus on various art media of foil and sharpie markers, clay, and puffy paint. We have enjoyed frog hunting on the Rail Trail and picking out books at the Bachelder Library as well.
Join us on Saturday and Sunday, October 19 and 20, at Jake’s Market for our third annual Harvest Bake and Pumpkin Sale! We will be there from 8 AM to 4 PM on Saturday and from 9 AM to 1 PM on Sunday. Hope to see you there!
