Road Agent Position Comes with Additional Responsibilities

Insurance, bidding, maintenance records ...

Notice to Candidates for Road Agent

Andover is in a unique situation in that we still elect a Road Agent as opposed to having a full-time paid position. Because the Town does not directly supervise the Road Agent’s crew at the work sites, our insurance carrier, Property-Liability Trust, has informed us that we cannot provide Worker’s Comp insurance to those individuals.

Therefore, the Town no longer pays highway laborers as Town employees. Instead, the Road Agent is paid as a contractor, and it is his responsibility to hire his crew and provide Worker’s Comp insurance for them. Rates were adjusted last year to compensate for this added expense to the Road Agent.

Additionally, the Board will require:

  • Bidding of materials and projects over $10,000.

  • Bidding of winter plowing contracts starting in 2014/2015.

  • Maintenance records of roads, inventory, and Town equipment.

Please take these policies into consideration as you think about running for this position.
