Here’s some old news from the Andover, East Andover, West Andover, Potter Place, and Cilleyville “gossip” columns of the Franklin Journal Transcript, selected by Heather Makechnie.
December 2, 1962: Miss Elizabeth Broshek, of Andover, a junior at the University of New Hampshire, has been elected a member of the 1965-66 UNH Student Senate. The 72-member Senate is the central governing body of the undergraduate students at the University.
December 9, 1962: Over 250 Attend Open House Honoring Mr. and Mrs. Victor E. Phelps on their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Cards were received from Senator Thomas McIntyre and Governor John King. All of the children and grandchildren, with the exception of Victoria Stickney, were present. One grandson, PFC Murray Smith, just arrived from Thailand a few days earlier.
Helen Davis, a native of Andover, and Victor E. Phelps of Danbury were married December 6, 1915, and have made their home in Andover ever since. Children include Mrs. Murray (Dolly) Smith, Victor H. Phelps, Mrs. Arthur (Geneva) Jones, and the late Air Force Lt. Robert Phelps, who was killed in an airplane crash at Christmas time 1951.
Mrs. Phelps has been an active member of the Unitarian Church for many years, has been active in the Andover Service Club, the Nurses Committee, and put in many long hours on cancer dressings and other work with the Cancer Association.
Mr. Phelps has held just about every office imaginable and has held them for years. For example, he is a Representative to the Legislature, and has been for nine sessions. He has been Town and School Treasurer for 48 years, Fire Chief for 35 years, Fire Warden for 25 years, and Water Commissioner for 40 years. In addition to his public service, he is Past Patron of Ragged Mountain Chapter OES, fifty-year member and Past Master of Kearsarge Lodge, F & AM, Present Master of Blackwater Grange (a post he has held several times), and a member of the Andover Fish and Game Club.
The 1961 Andover Town Report was one of eleven winning top awards in the 25th annual Municipal Reports contest sponsored by the University of New Hampshire’s Public Administration Service. The Andover report was rated first in the Class II population class (500 to 1,000 residents.)

December 23, 1962: Much sympathy goes to Walter Locke, Jr., and families, on the death of his wife Mrs. Locke, in an automobile accident this past week.
December 30, 1962: Much sympathy goes to the family of Mrs. Ada Little of North Sutton, who passed away this week. Mrs. Little was born in Andover 82 years ago, and was a graduate of Proctor Academy. She was the only survivor of her class.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Powers, Sr., of Ragged Mountain Fish and Game Club held their 38th wedding anniversary with their son, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Powers in Potter Place on Christmas Day, with all the families gathering.
East Andover Paratrooper, Sp/4 Stephen D. Jewett, is the First Fatality From the Franklin Area in the Vietnamese Conflict: The son of Mr. and Mrs. Noah and Irene Jewett, Stephen was born 23 years ago in Yarmouth, Maine. The Jewetts moved to East Andover in 1948, and Stephen graduated Andover High School in 1960. He studied for a year at UNH, then was a cadet at West Point from June 1962 to October 1963. After West Point he worked for a year at International Packing in Bristol as a member of the Army Reserve. He enlisted in the Army in September of 1964. Recently he had been stationed at Bien Hoa base in Viet Nam.
